Kashmir looks compact on a map, but day trips follow mountain roads and local transport rules. A comfortable first visit usually needs five to seven nights. Srinagar works as the arrival base, while one or two overnight stays in Pahalgam or Gulmarg make the journey feel less rushed.
A balanced six-day outline
Days 1–2: Srinagar
Keep arrival day light. Use the second day for the Mughal gardens, Old Srinagar, Hazratbal and a shikara ride. Travellers who prefer a lake stay can compare the practical differences in our Srinagar hotel and houseboat guide.
Day 3: Gulmarg
Leave early, especially when Gondola tickets are booked for a fixed slot. Winter trips need extra road buffer. In busy periods, local movement rules can change, so confirm what your Srinagar vehicle can cover.
Days 4–5: Pahalgam
An overnight stay gives time for the Lidder valley and a slower morning. Aru, Betaab Valley and Chandanwari typically involve local union vehicles, separate from the taxi that brought you from Srinagar.
Day 6: Sonamarg or departure
Use Sonamarg as a full day trip only when departure is the following day. If your flight leaves on day six, keep the final night in Srinagar.
Package or independent bookings?
Independent booking gives control over hotels and pace. A package can reduce coordination work when the group includes children, older travellers or several rooms. Compare the itinerary—not just the headline price—and check whether the hotel names, room category, vehicle type and sightseeing exclusions are written clearly.
For ready-made and custom options, review these Kashmir tour packages as a planning benchmark. Adapt the schedule rather than automatically choosing the itinerary with the most stops.
Before you confirm
- Keep a Srinagar buffer night before an important flight.
- Confirm Gondola tickets independently of the vehicle booking.
- Ask whether heating and hot water are continuous at winter hotels.
- Carry layers even in summer; evenings can turn cool quickly.
- Recheck current advisories and road conditions close to travel.
