The road from Srinagar to Leh

A two-day transition from Kashmir’s green valleys to Ladakh’s high desert, with Kargil as the natural overnight stop.

The Srinagar–Leh highway covers roughly 420 kilometres, but distance alone does not describe the journey. Road conditions, security timings, pass traffic and sightseeing stops make a two-day plan far more comfortable than a rushed direct transfer.

Road through the high mountains between Srinagar and Leh

Recommended two-day route

Day 1: Srinagar to Kargil

Start early for Sonamarg, then cross Zoji La toward Drass. The Kargil War Memorial is the main planned stop before the final drive to Kargil. Expect a long day even when the map suggests otherwise.

Day 2: Kargil to Leh

The landscape opens through Mulbekh, Namika La, Fotu La and Lamayuru. Depending on time, common stops include Moonland, the Indus–Zanskar confluence, Magnetic Hill and Pathar Sahib before Leh.

Why two days? It allows useful breaks and a night at a lower altitude than Leh. It is still essential to rest after arrival and follow appropriate high-altitude health advice.

Choosing a vehicle

A sedan can work for two or three light travellers in good road conditions. Families and groups usually prefer an SUV for luggage and rough sections. Tempo Travellers suit larger groups but take longer through narrow pass traffic. Always confirm the exact vehicle model, luggage capacity and whether the quote is a direct drop or includes overnight sightseeing.

Questions to ask before paying

  • Is the Kargil hotel included or booked separately?
  • Are tolls, parking and driver night allowance included?
  • Which sightseeing stops are included in the quoted time?
  • What happens if Zoji La is closed or regulated?
  • Is the vehicle permitted to complete the journey into Leh?

Continue into Ladakh

Do not schedule Nubra or Pangong immediately after reaching Leh. Keep acclimatisation time in the city, arrange permits and then begin the circuit. Our Ladakh trip planner explains the pacing. Travellers who prefer an organised circuit can compare Ladakh tour packages after deciding how many days they actually have.
