The Complete Kashmir Travel Guide

Kashmir combines lakes, gardens, alpine valleys, mountain roads and living culture. The best trips balance Srinagar with two or three valleys instead of changing hotels every night.

Kashmir at a glance

Srinagar is the transport and accommodation hub. Gulmarg is the mountain resort, Pahalgam the base for river valleys and walks, and Sonamarg the gateway toward Zoji La. Yusmarg, Doodhpathri, Gurez and the Lolab–Bangus region suit travellers with more time.

Srinagar

Allow at least two full days. Explore Dal Lake at dawn or evening, the Mughal gardens, Hazratbal, the old city, markets and traditional neighbourhoods. A houseboat night can be memorable, but check road access, heating, bathroom standards and exact location. Compare practical options in this guide to Srinagar hotels and houseboats.

Gulmarg

Gulmarg works as a day trip, but an overnight stay gives a quieter evening and an early start. Snow conditions vary by month and year. Gondola tickets should be obtained only through authorised channels. In winter, use suitable footwear and confirm whether local transport or snow chains are required.

Pahalgam and its valleys

Pahalgam deserves two nights when possible. Local sightseeing commonly covers Betaab Valley, Aru Valley and Chandanwari under local vehicle arrangements. The riverside town is pleasant, but the surrounding valleys are the main reason to stay. Longer walks require weather awareness and, where appropriate, a registered guide.

Sonamarg

Sonamarg is seasonal and road access changes with snow. It is a rewarding day trip or overnight stop and the logical first stage of the road to Ladakh. Local pony, taxi and activity prices should be agreed clearly before starting.

Beyond the classic circuit

Yusmarg and Doodhpathri are gentle meadow excursions. Gurez is remote and needs multiple days, current access confirmation and realistic road expectations. Lolab and Bangus suit travellers interested in quieter landscapes. These places should be additions, not rushed substitutes for a first-time core itinerary.

Taxis and local transport

Pre-book airport pickup when arriving late. A private vehicle is convenient for families and multi-valley trips; shared options are cheaper but less flexible. Local taxi rules apply at several resorts. Confirm vehicle type, pickup time, parking fees, tolls and local transfers in writing. See current service options for a taxi in Srinagar.

Food and crafts

Wazwan is Kashmir’s celebrated multi-course cuisine. Also look for harissa in winter, nadru dishes, trout, breads from kandur bakeries, kahwa and noon chai. Buy carpets, papier-mâché, walnut wood, saffron and pashmina from reputable sellers; genuine handwork and fibre quality vary greatly.

Safety and local awareness

Conditions can change. Follow official advisories and local administration instructions, avoid demonstrations, keep identification available and do not photograph security installations. Weather affects mountain roads even when Srinagar is clear. Build flexibility into day trips.

A sensible booking approach

First choose season and trip length, then reserve flights, stays and transport. Compare inclusions carefully when reviewing Kashmir tour packages. A good quote names hotels, meal plan, exact vehicle, local sightseeing exclusions and cancellation terms.

Planning principle: Confirm time-sensitive rules, fares, opening dates, weather and road conditions directly before travel.

Turn the research into a realistic route.

Use the itinerary, transport and practical-information guides together before requesting quotes.
