Getting to Kashmir
Srinagar airport is the main gateway. Jammu is the principal railhead for many visitors, followed by a long road transfer. Airport security procedures can take time, so arrive early for departure and keep identification accessible.
Getting to Ladakh
Flying to Leh is quickest but requires deliberate acclimatisation. The Srinagar–Leh road rises more gradually and is usually planned over two days with Kargil overnight. The Manali approach is spectacular but crosses very high terrain and should not be treated as an acclimatisation shortcut.
The Srinagar–Leh road

Private versus shared taxis
Private taxis suit families, photographers and travellers needing stops. Shared taxis lower the per-person cost but may leave very early, limit luggage and follow fixed stops. Ask whether the fare covers tolls, parking, driver stay and pickup from your hotel.
Buses and motorcycles
Buses are economical but schedules can change and journeys are long. Motorcycling requires experience, protective equipment, suitable insurance and conservative daily distances. Never use speed to compensate for a late start on mountain roads.

- Start early and avoid night driving.
- Carry water, snacks and warm layers.
- Keep a buffer for closures and convoys.
- Use seat belts where fitted.
- Do not pressure a driver to overtake or rush.
