Documents to carry
Carry original government photo identification and several photocopies. Foreign visitors should carry passport, valid visa and copies. Keep digital copies offline. Hotels and checkpoints may request identification, and names should match transport bookings.
Ladakh access rules
Some border and protected areas have route-specific requirements. Nationality, passport type and current government notifications can change the process. The District Leh permit notice lists categories requiring Protected Area Permits, while the official Ladakh Tourism portal should be checked for current services and notices.
Kashmir and remote valleys
Standard tourist circuits generally use identity checks rather than tourist permits, but remote border valleys may have registration, checkpoint or nationality-related restrictions. Confirm Gurez and other remote routes locally before committing non-refundable bookings.
Mobile networks and internet
Connectivity varies sharply outside towns. Postpaid connections have historically been more reliable for visitors in Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh, while current roaming arrangements can change. Ask your provider before travel. Download maps, hotel details and documents for offline use.
Cash and payments
Cards and UPI are common in Srinagar and Leh but cannot be assumed in villages, at roadside stops or during outages. Carry enough cash for fuel, meals and small services, split between travellers. ATMs can be busy or temporarily unavailable.
Emergency preparation
Share your route with someone at home, note accommodation phone numbers, keep essential medicines in hand luggage and avoid depending on continuous internet. Travel insurance should explicitly cover your altitude and planned activities.
